The Swedish Lapphund descends from the ancient Northern Spitzes along with the Finish Lapphund. They were first used as hunting and guarding dogs, then later for reindeer herding. Number declined as methods of reindeer management changed. Extinction was avoid in the 1920's when a breeding programme was introduced. Despite this, only about 250 puppies are registered in Sweden each year.
